Mike Cross, the founding guitarist of Detroit’s alternative rock band Sponge, has died at the age of 57. In a Facebook post, the band Sponge confirmed the musician’s death. Cross died on Sunday and no cause of death was given.

In 1992, he joined the Detroit band as a guitarist alongside singer Vinnie Dombroski and brother Tim. He has contributed to their most popular songs such as ” Plowed “, ” Molly (16 Candles Down the Drain) ” and ” Have You Seen Mary “. Sponges signed with Columbia and released their debut album Rotting Piñata in 1994 followed by Wax Ecstatic in 1996.

1998’s New Pop Sunday by Sponge was the third and final record that Cross and his brother, bassist Tim Cross, made with the band before leaving in 2000.

Mike had returned after 20 years with his new band MC Roads in 2021.
