Greg Gilbert Died: What Was His Cause Of Death?

Greg Gilbert’s death was announced by his brother and bandmate Aaron Gilbert

English musician Greg Gilbert died at the age of 44 after five years of fighting bowel cancer. Gilbert was the lead singer of the rock band Delays, which he founded in 2001 and which still featured his brother Aaron Gilbert.

Greg Gilbert was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2016, which was already in stage four and had spread to his lungs. While Delays’ vocal has since undergone treatment to beat the disease, in the past month he revealed that it had been removed and that he was being treated for pain relief.

It was Aaron who publicized his brother’s death through an Instagram post. Gilbert left his wife and two daughters.

Gilbert died just over a month after revealing that he had interrupted his treatment on medical advice and was only undergoing palliative care.

“I have no idea how to do this, but this afternoon we took my brother from his house to some ethereal place,” Aaron wrote in the caption of an old photo of him with Gilbert backstage at a Delays concert.

“Greg died surrounded by the infinite love that we and you have offered him along this journey, we will never be able to express how much it meant to him (and to all of us) to have you on our side, carrying us like a battalion.”

“Your messages, your encouragement and your compassion have been oxygen to him for the past five years. He was my brother and my best friend, we did everything together. It was the greatest honor to be with him as he took his last breath before he left.”

Aaron ended by saying, “Thank you for sharing our grief and for making everything easier while you guys were also fighting your battles. And thanks for making Greg such a special person in your life. I’m grateful that we existed at the same time. We are all temporary, let us make our time here extraordinary”.

In revealing the interruption of his treatment in August, Greg wrote: “I was unfortunately taken out of treatment and now I’m just taking care of my pain. The pain is under control and the nurses are real angels”.

The Delays released four studio albums between 2004 and 2010, the most famous being their first, ‘Faded Seaside Glamour’. The ensemble has toured internationally with bands such as Manic Street Preachers and Franz Ferdinand. Watch the clip for the song ‘Valentine’ below:
