Fred Ward Death

Fred Ward passed away on May 8, his representative confirmed to Variety. He was 79 years old, and one of his last appearances had taken place in the second season of True Detective, where he played Colin Farrell’s ex-police father, Eddie Velcoro. In addition, about four years ago, Ward had agreed to participate in the Tremors series, inspired by one of his most famous films, and came to star in a pilot with his former co-star Kevin Bacon who unfortunately did not receive the green light. Throughout his long career, which dates back to the early 1970s, he used to play tough-guy roles, and some compared his profile to that of Humphrey Bogart.

Born in San Diego, California, Ward became interested in acting after serving in the Air Force and made his debut under none other than the Italian Roberto Rossellini for his 1973 miniseries L’età di Cosimo de Medici. Six years later he played one of Clint Eastwood’s allies in his Escape from Alcatraz, sponsored by Don Siegel, and in 1983 he appeared both in Silkwood opposite Meryl Streep and in Prime Minister. In this film by Philip Kaufman, he played the astronaut Gus Grissom, beginning to be known by the public and wanting to repeat his collaboration with the filmmaker years later in Henry and June, where he would play none other than the writer Henry Miller .

After leading the action-comedy Remo: Unarmed and dangerous, in 1990 he starred in the aforementioned Tremors, wherein the company of Bacon faced giant underground snakes and forged a cult film that would inspire four sequels (the first one did not have Bacon repeating, but Ward does). That same year she starred in Miami Blues, a breakout vehicle for Alec Baldwin, and landed appearances in two Robert Altman films. Two of the best known, moreover: The Hollywood Game and Crossed Lives, where he played secondary roles. In the middle of the decade, he would be the villain of the comedyGrab It Any Way You Can 33 ⅓: The Final Insult, bent on sabotaging the Oscars ceremony.

After the 2000s he participated in Road Trip (Journey of pirates), Ward’s career was developed mainly for the small screen, in series, and telefilms. Thus, he participated in ER, Grey’s Anatomy, and the United States of Tara, while he came to play Ronald Reagan in The Farewell Affair and, in 2013, landed a role in 2 Guns, starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg
