The sad announcement this Friday, May 13th. Fred Ward, Golden Globe-winning actor, and star of The Right Stuff died at the age of 79. The renowned artist passed away on May 8 from an unknown cause, a representative confirmed to the New York Post this morning.
“I am saddened to announce the passing of acclaimed actor Fred Ward, who passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2022, at the age of 79,” said the statement quoted by the Post and replicated by The Sun newspaper, which also detailed that he was a cook who served in the United States Air Force and then went to acting school and began his artistic career with a role in an Italian telefilm in 1973.
Renowned Actor Fred Ward Has Died
Fred Ward made his American film debut as a convict in Clint Eastwood’s 1979 film Escape from Alcatraz. Throughout his career, he appeared in such films as Southern Comfort, The Right Stuff, Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins, Tremors and Tremors 2: Aftershocks, Henry & June, The Player, Swing Shift, and Short Cuts, The Sun review mentioned.
“The unique thing about Fred Ward is that you never knew where he was going to appear, that’s how unpredictable his career choices were,” his publicist Ron Hofmann wrote in a statement to NPR. The news of the star’s death shook social networks this Friday, and many Hollywood gurus sent their condolences to the family, The Sun reported.

Film critic Robert Daniels tweeted: “Fred Ward was absurdly good. A professional in everything he did, from TREMORS to THE PLAYER. He could even put on a great performance in something as patently silly as JOE DIRT. Totally underrated.”
For his part, The Sun added, producer Charles de Lauzirika shared: “Fred Ward was such an unexpectedly versatile actor who worked in that stealth zone between character actor and movie star. He has always deserved more recognition. He’s so good on TREMORS, REMO, THE PLAYER, HENRY & JUNE… but my Ward favorites are still THE RIGHT STUFF and MIAMI BLUES. R.I.P.”
Your Last Wish
Although he did not reveal the cause of death, representative Ron Hofmann did share the actor’s last wish: “It was Fred Ward’s wish that any tribute in his memory is made in the form of donations to the Center for Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in Boston University.
According to the New York Post report, which quoted the actor’s representative in issuing the sad announcement, Fred Ward spent the last years of his life developing paintings, which was his second favorite art. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Marie-France Ward, and his son Django Ward.
