The singer and samba singer Elza Soares died this Thursday (20th). She was 91 years old. According to an official statement, she was at home and died of natural causes.
Recognized in 1999 as Singer of the Millennium, Elza Gomes da Conceição gave voice to iconic songs such as “Mulher do Fim do Mundo”, “Eu Bebo Sim” and “A Carne”.
Born into a family of 10 siblings, in Vila Vintém, a community in the Padre Miguel neighborhood, in the North Zone, the artist had a troubled childhood. She married at 12 and had her first child at 13.
“We just lost Elza Soares. One of the singers, one of the most impressive artists in Brazil. I’ve never met a woman like her. Someone who inspired me so much, who inspired so many people. Life was thrown at Elza all the time. Everything was an obstacle and the more she heard no, the more she became stronger”, reports the emotional presenter Zeca Camargo. She wrote an authorized biography of the singer in 2018.
On social media, actress Zezé Motta lamented the loss.
“Elza is, Elza will always be eternal. Gratitude for your existence, your art, and blackness. Lots of light in your path. Forever in the heart of Brazil”, she says.
The samba school Mocidade Independente de Padre Miguel left a farewell message for the artist.
You are the STAR! Your people have waited so long to see you again! And reviewed! You saw your independent love going on the Avenue in the most beautiful way possible! You were one of the greatest in this country. We can only thank you for everything. Dismayed! This is our farewell! Thank you, Goddess. We will never succumb! We are in mourning!”, reads the post.
Clube de Regatas do Flamengo also paid tribute.

She is also considered one of the 100 greatest voices in Brazilian music by Rolling Stone Brasil magazine.
