Edward Asner was born on November 15, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri, United States.
Son of Lizzie Seliger, housewife, and David Morris Asner.
Raised by an Orthodox Jew, he attended Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, and the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois.General Motors

After his military service, he joined the Chicago Playwrights Theater Company. In New York, he played Jonathan Jeremías Peachum in Threepenny Opera.
