Dennis “DT” Thomas, saxophonist and co-founder of Kool & the Gang, has passed away. A spokesman for the musician confirmed that he died in his sleep Saturday in New Jersey at the age of 70.

Born in February 1951 in Orlando, Florida, Thomas was one of seven teenagers who helped form the New Jersey band famous for its mix of jazz, soul, and funk in 1964. He did so with brothers Robert “Cole” Peel and Ronald Peel. Robert “Spike” McCains, Charles Smith, George Brown and Ricky West. Initially calling themselves Jazziacs, the band went through several name changes before settling into Kool & the Gang in 1969. That same year the group signed with De-Lite Records and released their self-titled debut album.

“Dee Tee” has served as an alto saxophonist, flutist, percussionist, and emcee in the group’s shows, and recently appeared with the award-winning group at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on July 4. A man in various hats, the group’s costume designer and in its early days, a “budget hawk,” with a saxophonist who carries the band’s earnings inside a paper bag on his horn bell.
