Oscar-winning editor David Brenner, of Justice League (2017), Born on the Fourth of July (1989) and Independence Day (1996), died this week, aged 59. The news was confirmed by Variety, which further disclosed crowdfunding launched by producer Jon Landau on GoFundMe, which aims to provide financial assistance to Brenner’s wife Amber and their children Annie, Haider, and Sasha.

“He was an extraordinary editor and a loving, compassionate family man,” Landau said in a statement. “In an effort to support David’s family through this terrible time, Lightstorm Entertainment created this GoFundMe account. More important than any financial assistance this may provide, it is an opportunity to let your wife and children know how many lives David has touched.”.

Brenner won the Academy Award for Best Editing alongside John Hutshing for his work on Oliver Stone’s Born on the Fourth of July. In addition to having worked with the director on several other films, he has also partnered with filmmakers such as Roland Emmerich and Zack Snyder.

In a note, the director of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) stated that he was “devastated at the loss of my dear friend and collaborator David Brenner. He was a talented artist and one of the kindest people I have ever known. He will be deeply missed. My condolences go out to with Amber and her children during this difficult time.”
