Argentine tango dancer and choreographer Juan Carlos Copes died this Saturday at the age of 89, due to complications due to the coronavirus that he contracted last December, his daughter Johana reported.

The artist, born on May 31, 1931 in Buenos Aires and recognized for having brought tango dance to the world with a choreographic style, had retired from the stage in 2015 due to health problems.

After attending milongas (tango salons) in the Argentine capital since he was young, he began to delineate his style by dancing as a couple from 1951 with María Nieves Rego, with whom he was married between 1964 and 1973.
In 1976, Johana was born, the result of a relationship with another woman 20 years younger and with whom she settled as a family. His daughter followed in his footsteps and was his last dance partner for more than two decades.
“We bid farewell to the great Juan Carlos Copes, legend of tango dance, chosen as ‘Dancer of the 20th century’ and Ambassador of Tango by ProTango / UNESCO, choreographer, trainer of generations of artists and who brought innovative tango shows to the world,” he wrote in his Twitter account the civil association ProTango Argentina.
