The former congressman died in Taos, New Mexico.

Donald Rumsfeld, who was the US Secretary of Defense for Gerald Ford (1975-1977) and George W. Bush (2001-2006), died at the age of 88 in the town of Taos, New Mexico, surrounded by his relatives, his family reported on Wednesday.

“History may remember him for his extraordinary accomplishments over six decades of public service, but for those who knew him best and whose lives were forever changed by it, we will remember his unwavering love for his wife Joyce, his family. and his friends, and the integrity he brought to a life dedicated to the country, “reads a statement.

The former Republican congressman was involved in the decision to invade Afghanistan and Iraq as part of the United States’ response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

In his memoirs ‘Known and Unknown’, Rumsfeld insisted that the removal of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein justified the effort. “Ridding the region from Saddam’s brutal regime has created a more stable and secure world,” he wrote, quoting The New York Times.

In this work, he avoided the question of whether the Iraq war had diverted resources from Afghanistan, causing the resurgence of the Taliban in that country. “It was precise during the harshest period of the Iraq war that Afghanistan, with the help of the coalition, took some of its most promising steps towards a free and better future,” he said.

He was born on July 9, 1932. He was Secretary of Defense between 1975 and 1977 under Gerald Ford and then from 2001 to 2006 under the George W. Bush administration.

He was a pilot and flight instructor for the Navy. He won the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.
